signs in a vedic chart (rasi)

Astrological signs in Vedic astrology are known as Rasi. These are 30 degree divisions of the zodiac, which total to 12 individual signs. This post is about basic Kundali (chart) reading and what we are seeing when we look at a South Indian chart. The 12 Rasi in Indian charts are fixed in place. This happens to be different from some other systems of astrology wherein the signs are plotted in different areas for each chart. This is also a unique aspect of Vedic astrology which sets it apart from several other branches.
Whenever this chart format is used, these boxes, which designate houses and signs, remain in their respective places.
Mesha (Aries) is always the second top box from the left and the Rasi (signs) are always in order going clockwise. A southern style chart is always read clockwise as far as signs are concerned. For examining certain factors and details regarding the outward or more visible aspects and attributes of an individual, these signs are further divided into 10 degrees each called Drekkana.
